The Local Area...

The local area is full of history and unspoiled scenery. Hill on the Wall is in a perfect location for exploring the famous Roman wall marking the Northern border of the former Roman Empire - Hadrians Wall. We're only a short walk to the wall itself and only 0.25 miles from Birdoswald Roman Fort - one of the best preserved forts on the entire wall.

Gilsland village is surrounded by stunning countryside with great walking and cycling opportunities locally whatever standard you enjoy. There's the Hadrian's Wall Cycleway - cycle the full length of the wall.

To the west, Brampton and the historic city of Carlisle with its Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House (Border Reivers) Museum, as well as its excellent shopping and restaurants, are well worth a visit.

Several major walking routes such as the Hadrian's Wall National Trail and the Pennine Way pass through the area, as well as cycle routes such as the Coast to Coast (C2C) and the Hadrian's Wall Cycle Way (South Shields to Ravenglass).

Or perhaps water sports such as dinghy sailing, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing are your thing? If so, these are all available locally at Talkin Tarn Country Park. Fishing is also allowed at the tarn.

The Eden Valley is also just a few minutes drive away also with superb fishing and quiet, easy walks by the river.

Or if you want to escape even more, the peaceful North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is close by too.

We are also only 50 minutes from Ullswater in the Lake District National Park.

Whether it is walking, cycling, horse riding, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing or mountain biking, there is always something for everyone in Hadrian's Wall Country.

Customer Review:

"One of Our Holiday Highlights"
"Stayed, sadly for only 1 evening but had a lovely room and excellent dinner recommendation. Elaine made us feel at home. So close to the wall and superbly clean. Breakfast was spectacular. No need for lunch that day. Thank you for a marvelous stay."
